How we chose these laptops
We reviewed laptops from established brands sold on Amazon.in for under ₹40,000 on the day of our update. We excluded refurbished and second-hand listings, and Windows laptops with Intel Celeron, Pentium or very old dual-core processors, because they feel slow on Windows 11. We also excluded laptops with low-resolution HD (1366×768) screens wherever a Full HD option existed.
We then compared processor, memory and upgradeability, storage, display, ports, warranty and owner ratings. Our rankings are based on research, not hands-on testing. Read more on our How We Pick Products page.
Buying guide: how to choose a laptop under ₹40,000
Windows, Chromebook or Android?
Choose Windows if you need specific programs such as Microsoft Office desktop apps, Tally, coding tools or exam software. Choose a Chromebook if you mostly use a browser, Google Docs and web apps and want something simple and secure. Choose an Android laptop like Primebook for school students who use Android apps and online classes, and for the longest battery life at the lowest price.
Avoid Celeron and Pentium on Windows
Many sub-₹40,000 Windows laptops use Intel Celeron N4500 or Pentium processors. They can open a browser, but Windows 11 updates, video calls and multiple tabs quickly slow them down. A Ryzen 3 or Core i3 laptop costs a little more but feels far faster and lasts years longer.
RAM and storage
8 GB of RAM is the minimum for a Windows laptop today. If possible, choose a model whose RAM can be upgraded later, such as the Acer Aspire Lite or Aspire 3. Most Windows laptops in this range have 256 GB of SSD storage, which is enough for documents and apps; use cloud storage or an external drive for large photo and video collections.
Display
Insist on a Full HD (1920×1080) screen. HD (1366×768) screens look grainy and fit less on screen. IPS panels have better colours and viewing angles.
Warranty and service
Most laptops here carry a one-year warranty. Check for a service centre near you, and look for on-site warranty options if you live outside a major city.
Frequently asked questions
Which is the best laptop under ₹40,000 in India?
The Acer Aspire 3 with the 13th Gen Core i3-1315U is the most powerful Windows laptop we found under ₹40,000. For a lower price, the Acer Aspire Lite with the Ryzen 3 5400U is the best value.
Is a Celeron laptop good enough?
For Windows, we do not recommend it. Celeron laptops struggle with Windows 11, video calls and multitasking. If your budget only allows a Celeron, consider a Chromebook or Primebook instead, which run smoothly on modest hardware.
Can I do online classes on a Primebook or Chromebook?
Yes. Both support Google Meet and Zoom, and Primebook also runs Android apps. Check that any app your school requires is available for Android or works in a browser.
Is 256 GB enough storage?
For documents, apps and some photos, yes. Use Google Drive or an external drive for large files. If you need more space, some laptops let you swap in a bigger SSD later.
Which laptop under ₹40,000 is best for coding?
The Acer Aspire 3 with the Core i3-1315U is the best choice for learning to code in this range. Upgrade its RAM to 16 GB if you start running heavier tools.
Should I buy now or wait for a sale?
Laptop prices in India often drop during big sale events and with bank card offers. If you need a laptop now, buy from this list; if you can wait, a sale can bring a better model within budget.
Final verdict
For a Windows laptop under ₹40,000, the Acer Aspire 3 with the Core i3-1315U is the one to get. If you want to save a little, the Acer Aspire Lite is well built and upgradeable. For school students and browser-based work, the Primebook 2 Max and ASUS Chromebook CX1405 offer excellent value.
